crisman_philadelphia_fashion_001-590x736“The Best of Philadelphia”

I can remember a few years back reading the Philadelphia Magazine in the barbershop saying I need to be in this magazine. I always considered myself as a fashion maven residing in the area so I knew that one day a kings dream would come true. Now 3 years later I had the pleasure of being featured in the March 2013 issue for  fashion highlighting “20 best dressed Philadelphian’s”. It was a honor to be recognized in such a notable level amongst many other fashionable people in the city of Philadelphia. As fashion is something I breathe, to be labeled as this in the city that I was born and raised in and carry it on my back everywhere I go is an honor and truly an amazing feeling.

A Kings Essential: The Turtleneck

IMG_8118

 ”Something so effortless and refined”

Initially when looking for something fashionable to wear, often I would overlook the turtleneck . Over the years peoples perception of the “turtleneck” was altered due to years of brands only targeting the more mature crowd such as; grandfathers, grandmother etc, thus the turtleneck has evolved into a “must have” for the fashion innovator. As traditional Americana circumvented back into the mainstream fashion industry, this created an outlet for the turtleneck to be reintroduced.

A King’s Essential: Connor Dickson

Quality, Unique, American” – Connor Dickson

A key part of a King’s lifestyle are his networking abilities. In my travel’s I had a pethora of opportunites to meet an array of different entrepreneur’s and learn from other brands within the surrounding community. With that being said, it’s extremely important to me that we support local brands that have a good message behind them or a unique standing. One local entrepeneur whom I’ve gained a great respect for is designer Connor Dickson, of Lancaster, PA. Connor Dickson’s brand consists of bow ties, belts, bags which all are essentials parts in a King’s wardrobe. Each product is completely handmade within an Amish community in Pennsylvania with great attention to details that ensures the customer is receiving an heirloom piece.

I recently had the opportunity to curate a photo shoot with Connor and his brand. With Lancaster, Pa being so close but seemingly so far away- it was definitely an experience to remember. Make sure you look out for this brand and their collaborations coming soon with K.R.T. – K.R.T.

A King’s Read: Bereolaesque

“Style transcends far beyond the naked eye.” – Bereolaesque

To be considered a true gentleman of style one must demonstrate the proper etiquette in both appearance and behavior: knowing how to treat your Queen, what to wear to an event, how to work the room with just your charm… having proper etiquette at any given time, no matter the circumstance. Most men nowadays may not learn this from a father figure, which is why I appreciate my mother for the way she raised me. I can honestly say she taught me how to be a gentleman or, at the least, demonstrated her idea of what she thought it took to raise a young King. Queens really do inspire Kings to better themselves.

” Videos and photos shows the story”

I recently had the opportunity to do an amazing video and photo shoot on a Brooklyn rooftop with 1stClassDreamz (Nadir Nelson) and photographer Natasha Lynette to display some of my looks and new K.R.T. collection. This collaborative effort has been talked about for quite some time but we finally manage to get things done. In the video below you will see the entire shoot from my style to some of our many laughs during this day. – K.R.T.

I was asked in the video what were 10 words that represent the Brand and myself:

  1. Peace

  4. Power
  5. Longevity
  6. Change
  7. Consistency

A King’s Essential: Armstrong & Wilson Pocket Square

“It’s ok to be a square”

There was a time when I would wear a blazer without a pocket square and thought nothing of it. Maybe because I thought of it as just a handkerchief with no real purpose, or maybe it just reminded me of old men. I never realized how much of an impact this small accessory could make on an outfit, giving it that perfect polish. Every time I see a well dressed man in a suit or blazer, I look to see if he has a pocket square or how he accessorizes his look. Now whenever I wear a blazer of any kind, pocket squares are my go to accessory.

“The K.R.T. Hoodie collection”

I asked my good friend Derrick Woodyard who shot my video, Behind the King: A King’s Journey to tape the experience.  The shoot was filmed at Search and Rescue headquarters, a multi-functional space curated by Coach Gaines and Kenya Abdul-Hadi, that serves as a fashion workshop and showroom for installations.

In this video you will see the collection of 6 K.R.T. hoodies I released for the men since starting my clothing brand in July of 2011, along with the new Limited Edition “Floral” Queen hoodies which will be available soon. K.R.T. x Osrick Ingredients Cricket Styles Michael Reynolds

“Kings Ruling together” – Young King

I recently teamed up with a great friend of mine Michael Reynolds, to do a style project for Osrick Ingredients Cricket. Osrick Ingredients Cricket is a menswear line that offers cutting edge men’s cricket inspired clothing, such as t-shirts, knit vests, cricket pique shirts, cricket sport coats, Oxford shirts, trousers, and other sport inspired apparel products.

The video was shot by Juan Ortiz of Redd Pen Media, it captures behind the scenes footage from the shoot. I love what I do and this day was no different, it was filled with a lot of hard work and excitement. I styled along side with Rodney Jon (MUA), Vincent sawyer (His Exclusively) and Pixtions (Photography). Check out the video. - K.R.T.

A King’s Essential: Army Fatigue Cargo

IMG_6218

“Blending in while standing out” – Young King

I chose the army fatigue cargo pant as an “essential” simply because of it’s versatility and standard. This may also be the reason why this pattern is being used now more than ever in the fashion industry.  People  are starting to realize that fatigue is the new black, offering a  unique pop when needed. While at the same time providing a neutral balance to pop color.  This trend has influenced  many brands to produce merchandise such as boots, shoes, bags, ties or  anything they can think of, with this disruptive pattern material.

” The colors don’t make the man, the man makes the colors.” – Young King

When you think of a King what’s the first thing that comes to mind, a strong masculine man of power with a deep voice that is charming? Maybe? Maybe not? A King is a gentleman who is highly respected in some fields, carries himself with the utmost dignity and holds a preeminent position amongst competitors. It is the 21st century and I can assure you that the idea of a King has changed drastically. Not looked upon as someone sitting on a high throne, I do not look for the approval of others, being a King is a mindset.

Essence magazine offers an online publication that caters to the wants and needs of all their readers. When I first started K.R.T., I did not know what it would bring but I was fortunate to have features on online publications, with Essence being one of many. My various features with Essence in the past were usually solo spotlights and very spontaneous. This time was very different, there was a game plan and I was asked to bring some friends along.

Behind The King: K.R.T. Academy

In this Photo: We had one of the nerds take our picture with his camera while the photographers Chris Ackrivo & Misha Vaksman caught shots of him doing so.

K.R.T. Academy featured 19 guys including myself that created one of the most memorable moments of my life. Eager to let this story unfold, I cannot express enough how much joy that day brought. It was an honor that I was able to bring forth so many gentlemen for this project. K.R.T. Academy began, as a mere idea that I figured if it was going to happen, now is a better time than ever. I figured this was a way to highlight my styling abilities as well as other young Kings that I work with on a day-to-day basis.

A King’s Theme: The 24 Hour Man

thestart-2

”A outfit you wear all day that is suitable in all occasion/ every situation”

Long days and even longer nights are common for the average mover & shaker of today.  Most days I leave the house and may not return until the sun is rising. When you are young and eager to take on opportunities there will be times when sleep is the last thing on your mind. Some may call this being a entrepreneur but I call this being a 24 Hour Man.

When leaving the house for the day one must be dressed for a number of occasions that may present themselves. It can be challenging to dress in an ensemble that is multi-functional, stylish and suitable for most ocassions. The 24 Hour Man must push the envelope, not blending in and staying on point throughout the day. Finding the right outfit to carry you through is a skill that the 24 Hour Man must perfect.

A King’s Theme: Men’s Slippers

slippers

“Let’s slip into something a lil more comfortable”

When thinking of men’s shoes what comes to mind? Maybe a wingtip, oxford, loafer or even a moccasin. Well a stylish alternative for men that has been hitting the streets, the nightlife and even the runway lately are men’s slippers. Not just any old slipper but hard-soled, velvet, fabric, embroidered, heeled slippers. Being able to rock a bedroom staple outside of its normality mixes up the variety of casual menswear whether it be dressing it up or down. The velvet slipper originated and gained popularity in 1840 with Prince Albert and are known as “The Albert Slipper” which gives them an opulent image.

Men’s slippers are quickly became one of the freshest trends in menswear. Some look at it as just being a slipper but this item ranges upward from $300 which keeps it from becoming trendier than most footwear. Very fun, stylish and comfortable, slippers can be worn both day and night adding flavor to shorts, cropped pants, jeans and full suits. Slippers add a regal flair and are the footwear of choice for any young King. – K.R.T.

K.R.T. Tanks vs Tees

untitled-2-2

What happens when five of the hottest brands in Philadelphia come together for a photo shoot?

In a market where everything is a competition, joining forces with someone that is in the same field as you is the last thing one would think to do. Well unity is what Kings Rule Together is all about. Relying on others and highlighting your peers not only lifts others up but in turn helps to lift you up as well.

I decided to bring out five of the hottest young brands out of Philadelphia that I admire, and use their owners to collaborate in a photo shoot. With each brand having a distinct style and following, one thing that we all have in common are “Tees & Tanks”.  Each shirt shows 5 different perspectives on style.

A tank top is not only the new summer essential but a confident man’s best friend. Only to be worn during certain occasions but it’s fitting to beat the summer heat and still remain fashionable. Most men may shy away from this item because they’re not fit enough or just self conscious. Playing it safe and sticking to a T-shirt is still quite fine too. – K.R.T.

Growing up in the 80s & 90s with a passion for art Don Scott, owner of  THE DNTN BRANDevolved his company from the Don-Ation Clothing Brand. Not considering himself a fashion designer, Don is an artist transitioning his art into a wearable form. The DNTN Brand has become one of the most anticipated Philadelphia clothing lines and has been adopted by the urban/streetwear/hip hop & art community scene. With his new premium artwear collection rising and his keen artistic ability DNTN Brand is poised to make a creative splash.

“Intellectually Artistic” is a phrase that can somewhat describe Abstract Thought! Founded in 2007 by William Nearn Jr., Abstract Thought’s purpose is to design and distribute a unique type of clothing that will create its own timeless genre. They also challenge the consumer to derive his/her own understanding of their shirts in addition to hosting some of the dopest T-shirt release parties in the city. Their motto is “Always Think Abstract”

Founder Gianni Lee &  fellow Babylon Cartel members burst onto the City of Brotherly Love’s fashion scene with extremely colorful energy and unique style. Babylon Cartel was founded on the notion of “Pushing the Envelope” in street wear. Babylon wants to become a social hub that consumers relate to. We want to be the brand that you connect with on a day to day basis. Dressing up or dressing down, Babylon Cartel will not only be there for you to wear, but you can also be apart of “Babylon Cartel”.

King Rule Together started in November 2010 as a way to showcase my different endeavors in fashion, styling, event planning and style. The mantra of Kings Rule Together is a focus on bringing together men’s fashion and talented purveyors of men’s style. Kings Rule Together is a collective of gentlemen who understand the dynamics of not only dressing the part, but of being the part. It is my hope to showcase the Kings Inspire Kings tee-shirt and tank as a shining example of how what a person wears can serve as an inspiration for others. In the future, I envision Kings Rule Together the clothing brand as an extension of my style and an embodiment of the future of men’s fashion.

AnmlHse (pronounced Animal House) is a Philadelphia based company, formed by a group of college students concentrating in the visual arts field. Founded by Jonny Rabbit & PandaReemy, AnmlHse is a company surrounded by a brotherhood, which they call The AnmlHse Crew. This weird cast of characters serve as a foundation to their company and brings much to the table with each person’s individual talent. As a brand fully operating in it’s college years, they strive to showcase life experiences; whether it be struggling, entertaining, or being successful, they  hope that most people will be entertained by their daily ventures.

“The Last Man Standing”

When I first met the owner of Young Couture magazine Amurri Lauren I didn’t know what to expect. One thing I did know is that she had done her research on me and as we began to pick each other’s brains I was very intrigued by her vision for her new online magazine.

The idea she used to describe my shoot were “Last Man Standing”.  The idea is that in a men’s fashion world that is one dimensional, I am the last stylish man standing. I was extremely flattered by the depiction and it was an honor to work with such a talented crew including photographers Misha V. & Chris Ackrivo.

Check out more photos and what I wore on the “Last Man Standing” shoot and watch the video “Fancy” featuring myself, Saleem from Cherry Pie and Rodney ONeal McKnight. K.R.T.

A King’s Theme: Men in Pink

“Back when they thought pink polos would hurt the Roc…” -Kanye West

Your typical wardrobe is full of blue, brown, black, white and grey. It’s ok to play it safe but try infusing a variety of colors into your wardrobe and you’ll be glad you did it. The usually feminine color pink, is something most men feel like they can’t pull off. From amongst the most common reasons men shy away from the color is fearing judgment from peers. The fact is, pink is not something that you should be afraid of. Pink is finding its way into most menswear – from cardigans, dress shirts, ties and other accessories, pink is definitely becoming the new essential color. K.R.T.

What colors goes well with Pink:

  • Pink & most Blue tones
  • Pink & Black
  • Pink & Brown
  • Pink & Tan
  • Pink & Grey
  • Pink & Purple

Shades of Pink: These words are synonymous with pink or represent various shades of the color pink: blush, coral, flesh, flush, fuchsia, hot pink, magenta, raspberry, rose, salmon.
